What’s Happening At AACARI?

We constantly hear the term ‘food security’ being used by governments all around the world, and with the new phenomenon of climate besieging the planet, it is important that climate resilient methods of cultivation be implemented in national agricultural practices.

To this end, the United Nations Development Program & Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources of Dominican Republic has organized the Bes-NET Caribbean Trialogue on Pollinators, Food Security and Climate Resilience to be held in in the Dominican Republic from the 4th – 6th September, 2018. Executive Director – Ms Pamella Thomas, who was also the President of a local farmer’s organization – Team Fresh Produce Co-operative- TFPC, Mr. Mark Remy the Belleview Farmers’ Cooperative – of St. Lucia and Mr. Otis Jeffers from the St. Kitts Farmers’ Cooperative; all AACARI member organizations will be representing the Regional organization.. Ms. Thomas will also make a presentation and participate in a panel discussion that will facilitate charting of the way forward.

It is expected that this Trialogue will raise awareness of the findings of the global assessment on pollinators by IPBES, create a shared space for the joint assessment of regionally-relevant knowledge on pollinators, food security and climate resilience, impact the co-creation of locally appropriate policy options and build a common agenda for action.

It is important that farmers especially, support measures that are intended to protect and enhance the longevity of pollinators since their presence ensures that there is diversity in crops which help them to be more resilient not only to diseases but also to climatic conditions.
